“Kevin Costner Chases Ideal Waves in New Horror Film”

For those middle-aged surf enthusiasts who have memorized countless movie lines, this one’s for you: it’s a nod to Matt George’s classic, “In Gods Hands,” famously delivered by a wide-eyed Shane Dorian.

And that brings us to the latest news. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Academy Award winner Kevin Costner, known for his role in “Yellowstone,” is set to co-write, produce, and star in a new surf-themed project titled “Headhunters.” In this film, Costner plays Lazer, a mysterious expat living in Bali. He convinces a surf photographer and a group of surfers to embark on a quest for the ultimate wave.

However, things take a thrilling turn when Lazer and his crew arrive on a remote island inhabited by an indigenous tribe of ancient headhunters. As you can imagine, the locals are not thrilled about their arrival. The story shifts from a sun-soaked surf adventure to a gripping horror tale.

The logline teases, “What ensues is an adventure turned survival story of epic and bloody proportions on a tropical island that initially appears to be paradise…but is actually closer to hell.” Costner’s Territory Pictures has teamed up with Scott Steindorff’s Stone Village Films, and cinematographer Steven Holleran is set to make his feature directorial debut with this film. Preproduction for “Headhunters” is already in progress, with filming scheduled to begin in Hawaii this November.

Scott Steindorff shared his excitement: “For decades, my friend Kevin and I have been searching for the right project to collaborate on. This is one of the best scripts I have seen in my career. Kevin is a legendary actor who brings so much depth and charisma to his roles, and he has crafted an iconic horror script with Steve.”

While Costner is beloved for his roles in films like “Field of Dreams” and “Tin Cup,” this project will require him to tap into a darker side, perhaps channeling a bit of that Colonel Kilgore energy—or even some of that classic Matt George vibe. As they say in Hollywood, stay tuned!
