Every Movie Starring Kevin Costner On Netflix
Kevin Costner has made a huge number of great movies in the course of his acting career, but only a handful are available to stream on Netflix. In his four decades of making movies, Kevin Costner has become one of the most notable actors of all time. He’s starred in some of the best Western movies ever made, like Dances with Wolves, as well as some of the best historical dramas and crime thrillers, like The Untouchables. After such a successful career, Costner has more than a handful of dedicated fans, and more than a few people who want to watch his movies.
Luckily, watching Costner’s movies has never been easier thanks to the era of streaming services. The only caveat to the on-demand films is the sheer number of streamers out there. With options like Max, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and more, many of Costner’s films are scattered across websites and locked behind paywalls. Most of his fans have access to the largest streaming service in the world, Netflix, but only four of Costner’s films are on the site. Fortunately, those four movies are a great glimpse into the different sides of Costner’s acting abilities and career, and they’re all worth watching.
The oldest Kevin Costner movie available to stream on Netflix is 1985’s Silverado. He plays Jake, a young cowboy who starts the movie in jail for killing a man in the classic Western. Costner also stars alongside a star-studded cast that includes Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Rosanna Arquette, John Cleese, and more. Directed and co-written by Lawrence Kasdan, who helped create several Star Wars movies, Silverado is a well-written, well-made, and entertaining Western that earned 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. Silverado is such a good movie that it actually counts as one of Costner’s best Western movies, even though he’s become a legend of the genre.
Though he’s not the lead actor in it, Molly’s Game still counts as one of Kevin Costner’s best movies, and almost certainly the best available to watch on Netflix. In Molly’s Game, Costner plays Larry Bloom, the overbearing father of Jessica Chastain’s Molly. Based on a true story and both written and directed by The West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, Molly’s Game follows Molly as she ends her professional skiing career to start a high-stakes and illegal poker game for celebrities and other rich and influential players. It also stars Idris Elba, Michael Cera, and Jeremy Strong, among many other stars.
Kevin Costner’s only Netflix original movie was The Highwaymen, which he starred in alongside Woody Harrelson. In The Highwaymen, Costner plays Frank Hamer, one of the Texas Rangers who tracked and killed the notorious bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde in 1934. It’s a fairly standard manhunt movie, but The Highwaymen‘s early 20th century setting places an interesting emphasis on Hamer’s ability to deduce where the criminals are heading with very little hard evidence. The Highwaymen also received an audience score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, which shows how interesting the true story was.
Though they’re both celebrated actors, it seems like Costner and Harrelson were born to play unsung heroes as they did in The Highwaymen.
In addition to being a major acting star, Kevin Costner also has a fairly extensive career as a director and screenwriter. He combined all three of those talents for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which has also been described as his magnum opus. In Horizon Chapter 1, Costner plays Hayes Ellison, a horse trader who winds up in a tough bind after he kills a man and flees with Abbey Lee’s Marigold. The rest of the cast of Horizon is stuffed with notable actors, though their paths don’t actually converge with Costner’s in the first film, as Horizon was always planned to be a four-film franchise.
